Amazon tree boas are found in South America , from Colombia to Bolivia. They grow to almost 6 feet in length and have an incredible, almost unparalleled, array of color morphs and patterns in the wild. Like pit vipers, Amazon tree boas have pit organs that sense heat and help them hunt, which means they are quick to strike at anything warm, including human hands. Amazon tree boas are also known for having an attitude, and I can say for sure this particular snake wasn’t very happy we found it (of course if a giant creature found you you’d likely be grumpy too!), but within 5 minutes she calmed, letting me get just an inch or two from her for this snake portrait that is a part of long term project on snakes I’m doing with @paulrosolie. I’m very grateful she allowed me some time with her as I hope these stories, over time, help change the way people view snakes.
To see a video of this snake when we first found her, head to @tbfrost
