Viti, means hell in Icelandic and was formed in 1724 by a massive eruption in the Krafla volcano, known as Myvatnseldar, that lasted for five years. The diameter of the crater is around 300 meters and it has an aqua blue lake that has formed inside it. Popular walking trails lead through the vicinity of the crater and it is a popular tourist destination in Iceland. Since 1977 the Krafla Power Station area has been the source of the geothermal energy for the area.
