For nearly 60 years, scientists in Siberia have bred silver foxes in an attempt to replay the domestication of dogs thousands of years ago. The goal: pinpointing the genes that set tame foxes apart from conventionally bred or aggressive foxes. Now those researchers have compiled the genome, or genetic instruction book, of Vulpes vulpes, the red fox species that includes this silver-coated variant. One group was bred for ever-tamer behavior — like Viktor (second photo, seen snuggling in the arms of @Rylai cofounder David Bassett). Another group was bred to be increasingly aggressive toward people (third photo). While that level of precision remains elusive, scientists did find 103 regions of the genome where tame and aggressive foxes tended to have different patterns of genetic variants. The newly completed genome “makes all kinds of research possible that weren’t before,” says canid evolutionary geneticist Ben Sacks.
