The most severe red tide (a dangerous algal bloom) in >10 yrs has left dead #sharks, #seaturtles, #dolphins, #manatees, & more in its wake. Huge drops in oxygen (hypoxia) caused mass fish die-offs. All life is in danger - including people already admitted to hospitals. - Why? A perfect storm: algae+ climate change+ pollution+ gov. inaction= disastrous consequences. With agriculture/real estate development continuing along the coast+no adequate regulations, safeguards/inspections in place, runoff, & pollution are entering the water. Algae then thrive & bloom- reducing O2 levels. - Now coastal waters have major freshwater influx from polluted, cyanobacteria-filled Lake Okeechobee. The lake’s regular toxic algae blooms feed off the pollution excreted from bordering farms & industrial sugar industry & once they reach the coast, cyanobacteria die & provide more nutrients for the growing red tide. - Protecting Florida’s waters (a network of life & tons of tourism dollars) shouldn't be political - it should be a given. Yet it's not. Protecting water systems= ensuring that critical safeguards are in place. Hundreds of millions of $ have been cut for water management districts. Rules have been softened/removed for those responsible for pollution; they aren’t held accountable or forced to clean up their mess. - HELP in FL: get out & ELECT candidates (Senate/Governor) vocal about protecting these waters. Tell those responsible that you will not be bullied into accepting this. Discuss. Demand answers/solutions. Federal support is slow but get the ball rolling locally NOW. If you see dead/distressed animals, tell @myfwc (wildlife alert hotline: 888-404-FWCC) & take photos/videos so that this crisis can’t be ignored. - Via @animalrevenge - ?? @worldanimalnews @peace_4animals
