Print! Tear it Up! now on at Somerset House. This exhibition proudly traces the rise of independent magazines in Britain since the 20th Century. From political satire to per-zines; fashion mags to feminist journals- Britain boasts an eclectic and challenging culture of indie press. The cultural significance of which cannot be understated. Curated to bold and bright perfection, the zines are pushed to speak volumes for themselves. Find cult hits like Mushpit, Oz and The Face. Fashion dominators like Dazed and the Beauty Papers. Politically and socially charged manifestos like Spare Rib and Private Eye. Niche periodicals like Sabbat and The Gourmand. Look at ones you've only heard of but never seen. See ones you never knew existed. There's one for every point of view, for every weirdly fascinating obscurity and curiosity.⠀ To continue to see such a growth in lo-fi pubs in such a dramatically digital age is relieving. An exhibition like this celebrates the power of tactile media, the smell and feel of a good GSM. The beauty and art of printing glitches, smudges and smears.⠀ A visual feast for the eyes, yes. A dose of DIY inspiration, too. But on a truly deeper level, a serious reminder of the privilege we acquire through the freedom of the printing press in this country. Something many countries do not have, something that could be quickly changed. Something not to be forgotten. ⠀ This exhibition will be on until 22 August, and is free to see. Make sure to visit this summer.
