These dolls are a traditional style doll form made in the southwestern Alaska by Yup'ik people. These dolls are dressed in traditional style doll parkas which would protect the users from cold weather. Here the unknown artist used beaver, seal, calfskin and leather to create them. Dolls in the Yup'ik area could traditionally be made of wood, bone, or walrus ivory. Male and female dolls were often distinguished anatomically and can be told apart by the addition of ivory labrets for males and chin tattooing for females.
