Kwinhagak is a coastal village on the Bering Sea in Southwestern Alaska. This year the king salmon run was strongest the end of June on the main stem of the Kuskokwim Delta. King Salmon harvesting provides an important food source throughout the year for the villagers in Kwinhagak who fish for subsistence.

However, in the past commercial fishing of salmon was vital to the economy of The Village of Kwinhagak as well as others on the coast but over the past view years there has been no opportunities for local residents to catch them commercially, essentially with no fish buyer signed up for the Kuskokwim region. Potential commercial buyers say uncertainty over commercial fish openings, weak global salmon prices and tensions between commercial and subsistence fishermen are the main cause. Villagers say the fishing closure negatively affects the economy and livelihood of entire communities.
