For 31 years, Margaret A. Winski has lived in the Montauk Lighthouse. From the tower — which was commissioned by President George Washington and built in 1796 — she spent her summers welcoming thousands of visitors. She watched 3 decades of autumns. She stood in the lantern room as snow swirled around her in the wintertime. “I’m a solitary person,” she said. “A lot of people would go out of their minds, I think.” For Margaret, who’s known as Marge, life in the lighthouse was a childhood dream realized. But now, she’s moving to Maine. “When you turn 60, something snaps in your head,” said the 62-year-old, who was photographed here by @thecadejo. Alas, her apartment is already taken. Joseph Gaviola, a Montauk businessman and member of the lighthouse board, is moving in. He plans to renovate the living space, in part to create more closet space for his suits. “It can be rough, lonely, isolated, a little scary at times, I’m sure,” he said. “On the other hand, it’s a utopian place. It’s, you know, historic, and you can’t think of a better view.”
