Waves crash against the famous surf spot Windansea Beach, a staple in Southern California surfing culture. The beach was named after an old oceanfront hotel that opened in 1909 and burned down in 1943 — the name stuck, even though the hotel didn’t last. Thanks to favorable wind conditions, Windansea offers quality surf for both shortboards and longboards; the waves here break both left and right over a flat rock reef and, depending on the time of year, average from two to ten feet.
