Photo by @irablockphoto// A Buddhist monk at the Gandantegchinien Monastery in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The original monastery was built in 1809, and spared a lot of destruction in the 1930’s when Mongolia fell under a Communist government. It was closed in 1938, and reopened again in 1944 with a minimal staff as a homage to Mongolian culture and religion. In 1990 with the end of Communism in Mongolia the Monastery was officially reopened and restoration began. Known as Gandan Monastery, it follows the tradition of Tibetan style Buddhism .
