Photo by @Joel Sartore | This colorful creature is a fringed leaf frog. Pictured here in a bold blue-green mottled coloration, this frog was once bright pink; they change color with age. The extensions of skin on their legs (called fringes) for which they get their name are thought to mimic lichen and thus help them look like flat bumps on a leaf when they are sleeping--a great way to avoid visual predators. This species can be found in the Amazonian lowlands in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It remains in the high canopy of primary tropical lowland rainforest, only descending to lower branches for breeding. This frog was photographed at @atlbotanical.
