On Saturday, 60 days after Delsy Guadalupe "Lupe" Serrano Torres was separated from her son Danny after they illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border near El Paso, Texas, the two were reunited more than 2,000 miles away in New York City.⠀

The mother and son, who had journeyed to the U.S. from their native Honduras, had been caught up in a new policy of the Trump administration's crackdown on immigration along the Southern border that resulted in the separation of more than 2,500 children from their family members.⠀

The 28-year-old mother was held at a detention center in Texas for more than a month while Danny, 9, had been sent to a foster family in Manhattan.⠀

Before Ms. Serrano Torres's release in late June, her sister-in-law in Maryland discovered Danny had been sent to a foster family and made contact with social workers handling his case. ⠀

On Friday, the family got a call: They could come pick Danny up the next morning at an East Harlem social-services agency.⠀
⠀
After a tearful reunion, the family headed back to Maryland, where Ms. Serrano Torres hopes they can stay. She has applied for asylum in the U.S. and is scheduled to appear in court in November.⠀⠀
