The Rosetta Stone records an official message about king Ptolemy V, who ruled 204–181 BC. It says that the priests of a temple in the city of Memphis supported the king. The message was inscribed three times – in hieroglyphs (suitable for a priestly decree), in Demotic (native script used for daily purposes) and in Greek (the language of administration). Because of this, scholars could start to decipher hieroglyphs based on their knowledge of Ancient Greek.
