Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (born October 13, 1989) is an American politician, educator, community organizer, and political activist. On June 26, 2018, Ocasio-Cortez won the Democratic primary in New York's 14th congressional district in what has been described as the biggest upset victory in the 2018 midterm-election season. Alexandria was born in the Bronx to two working-class parents. Alexandria went on to study at Boston University, where she earned degrees in Economics and International Relations. After studying, Ocasio-Cortez returned to the Bronx and began to pursue work in the areas that had impacted her own family growing up: education and community organizing. Ocasio-Cortez worked as an organizer for Bernie Sanders's 2016 presidential campaign. After the general election, she traveled across America by car, visiting places such as Flint, Michigan, and Standing Rock, and speaking to people affected by the human rights violations related to the Flint water crisis and the Dakota Access Pipeline. In an interview she recalled her visit to Standing Rock as a tipping point, saying that before that she had felt that the only way to effectively run for office was if you had access to wealth, social influence, and power. But her visit to North Dakota, where she saw others "putting their whole lives and everything that they had on the line for the protection of their community," inspired her to begin to work for her own community. Despite Crowley's 10-to-1 fundraising advantage over Ocasio-Cortez, the latter carried out a smart and organized grassroots campaign, along with a powerful viral video ad that began with her stating: "Women like me aren't supposed to run for office." Alexandria’s historic candidacy has already made history. Ocasio2018 has created a cascade of firsts: Alexandria the first NY-14 Democratic challenger in a generation; the first NY-14 candidate to run without any lobbyist money in modern history; and the first woman of color to *ever* run in NY-14 (a district that’s 70% people of color). Ocasio-Cortez will face Republican nominee Anthony Pappas in the November 6 general election. #wcw #herstory #timeless
