Over the years, Henry McCarter's work grew more abstract and colorful. This scene captures a sunrise over the Walters Farm on Perkiomen Creek in Salford, PA, where McCarter spent the last three summers of his life. As one critic observed, it was during this period that the painting of light absorbed him—“not light on objects, but light itself or objects in light. . . . The sunrise was not to him a mere pattern of colors, but his well-loved actual world.” See this work in "#ModernTimes: American Art 1910–1950."
