I was fourteen when I came West for the first time, gangly and heart-on-my-sleeve, a girl born and raised in the Heartland.
A girl who’d sit at her window, night after night, dreaming of leaving one day, of seeing all the things there were to see, to experience all that was out there.
I wrote a song about it last year, how it felt to finally cross the Mississippi and then keep on going. I fell in love with Arizona, and while the other teenagers on the trip were falling in love with one another, I was slipping away to lean against the fence post and drink in every detail...the way the dry air pushed through the canyon, and how the rocks stacked themselves upward. I’d never seen so many stars at once, or such rich color in the Earth’s crust.
I would sit on the edge of a plateau’s cliff, and marvel at the desert lightning, and how I could feel the mist of the storm before it ever arrived.
And oh, I was young, and maybe teenage crushes don’t last, but my love affair for this place hasn’t waned a bit, no matter how much time passes before we are reunited...and now I can say that I’ve lived here, I’ve called it home.
