This is such a great reminder for all of us, but especially for those of us who are parents and those of us in the climbing community. I just taught a class about fear in climbing and everyone was surprised to know that I get scared all the time and have cried almost every time I’ve been on El Cap. Growing up over twenty years ago in the climbing world it was seen as weak to admit this. But as I grew up I started to be inspired by those who didn’t just “conquer” the mountain, but by those who shared their whole selves. Fear and sadness are normal and healthy and I think it’s brave to show it. Being a mom now, I think it is incredibly important to teach our kids this.
