I’m Hanna Howard (@hannamariehoward) and I’m the lifestyle editor at Teen Vogue.
I pretty much always wanted to be a writer, and that evolved from wanting to write children’s books, to wanting to write novels, to wanting to write magazine features (though I think I still want to write a novel someday). I was obsessed with magazines when I was in high school and I was an editor on the yearbook staff all four years, so I decided the only path for me was to go to journalism school.
In college I majored in journalism and gender studies at Northwestern University. I was a copy editor for the daily student newspaper, a writer for the campus fashion magazine, and I was also a member of the Sex Week committee.
My very first job was as a teacher’s assistant for an academic summer program when I was in high school. I helped teach math to middle schoolers, which means I can still sing the quadratic equation when absolutely necessary. I also spent the summer between high school and college as a hostess in a local diner, which I think is still the hardest job I’ve ever had.
One piece of career advice I would give my younger self is: for other people to have confidence in you, you have to have confidence in yourself. I spent a lot of time when I was younger worrying that I didn't have all the right qualifications, or that I wasn't good enough, or that people would be bothered by me reaching out. What I realize now is that there were so many opportunities out there that I didn't even give myself a chance at because I didn't have enough confidence in myself. I wish I had just sucked it up and gone for it and that's what I recommend other people do with their career goals — worst case scenario you end up where you already are. ? #HowIGotHere ?: @zak_krevitt
