In my very first Brooklyn apartment (where my bedroom door was a sliding plastic accordion thing) I had my first ever chance to decorate entirely on my own. It was the greatest thrill I’d ever known. I went to Pearl River and bought a bright purple giant paper umbrella like this and hung it upside down over my flush ceiling light. Fire safety aside (probably wasn’t a safe idea), I had never felt prouder. I then proceeded to glue about 75 tiny mirrors to the living room wall. I felt like the coolest thing since sliced ? and somewhere along the way since then, I lost my passion for design. Maybe because it became work (because even what you love doing can eventually feel like work) or because I fell into the trap of thinking I needed to be more grown up. Either way, I miss that feeling. I miss my old DIY tendencies and the person who would buy 25 test pots of paint to create an impromptu mural on the wall. One of the things I’m hoping for over this break is to reconnect with that feeling of fun again. Design can sometimes feel like it has so many rules and things to “avoid” but I just want to find that place again where I can’t wait to try something that feels a little whacky and embrace the power that design has to make you feel happy and proud and excited about any space of any size. Do any of you remember your first big design decision and how it made you feel? When I saw this photo @liz_kamarul posted I was immediately whisked back to 2003 and my first moments alone in NYC picking out umbrellas. What a wonderful feeling it is to be able make a space your own ?
