Folic acid can prevent about 70% of birth defects of the brain and spinal cord. It has become a critical part of nutrition during pregnancy, and it was all thanks to British scientist Lucy Wills ?‍?

In the 1920s, Wills traveled to Bombay ?? to investigate a deadly form of #anemia among female textile workers. She sought to study whether dietary factors played a role and found that by adding brewer’s yeast to a diet otherwise lacking B vitamins, she could prevent anemia. Through subsequent trials, Wills helped identify what we now know as #folicacid.
