The surf community is unreal. I showed up to this Lake Michigan break and the one surf shop in town had already closed up for the evening. After enviously watching people surf the 1-2 foot mush, I warily walked up to a surfer taking a break next to his car, eating a sandwich. “I know this is really sketchy, but I have 40$ in my wallet, can I borrow your soft top for 30 minutes?” He looked at me slightly taken aback, then smiled, grabbed his foamie and handed it to me. “Oh my goodness, take it. Keep your money and go have fun.” I lasted about 20 minutes in the frigid 58 degree water, wearing a t-shirt and yoga pants, catching 1 foot closeouts and having the time of my life. He was back in the water when I got out to continue my drive up to Green Bay, and as I left him a thank you note, I saw him on a beautiful little right hander. Wisconsin, your water is cold but your people are so so warm. ❤️
