This elegant Eurasian spoonbill has a beak that's a marvel of engineering, allowing it to sift and strain food from the shallow waters wherever they live, from streams to marshes to estuaries. They sweep their heads from side to side in search of frogs, small fish, aquatic invertebrates and more. Once paired with a mate, males present females with sticks, which they show off by shaking their bills. Even with this courtship behavior though, pairs usually stay together for just one breeding season. They sleep while standing, often on one leg with their heads tucked under a shoulder. Though not globally threatened, the Eurasian spoonbill still faces a number of perils such as illegal hunting, habitat loss and degradation, predators, exploitation of eggs, and human disturbance.
