130 years after Vincent Van Gogh’s floundered attempt to establish a creative commune in Arles, the Provençal city may finally be getting its artists’ colony.
The new @larlatan, commissioned by Swiss art maverick Maja Hoffmann from the Cuban-American artist Jorge Pardo, comprises 30 hotel rooms and 11 artist’s residences, housed within a 15th-century palace once belonging to the Counts of Arlatan de Beaumont. The interiors are a joyous riot of light and colour, intended to introduce a dialogue between its locale and Pardo’s adopted home of Yucatán, México. ‘They’re both places where you look at the sky all the time,’ he says.
More than a million glazed, handmade ceramic tiles, in 11 different shapes and 18 colours (ranging from light yellows and tangerine to lavender and sky blue) comprise the geometric mosaics covering entire floors and parts of the walls, while 1,300 original pieces of furniture and 400 pieces of lighting populate the spaces. It’s a project that takes the idea of art as domestic and public space to a new level. We dispatched photographer @charlespetitforever and writer @benoitploiseau to take an exclusive first look.
