Bill Cunningham, who adopted as his uniform a blue French workman’s jacket and addressed everyone, regardless of age, as “Child,” was welcome everywhere. Though he was well known for documenting charity events, it wasn’t the bonfire glow of their grandeur that drew Cunningham to them. He certainly appreciated the glamour to be found at these fancy fetes, but more so his photos illuminated the spirit of giving and good citizenship. A sense of responsibility ran deep in him.
