You may recognize Caribou by its other name: reindeer! Caribou are the only deer species where BOTH females and males grow antlers, which grow seasonally. When their antlers grow in the spring they are covered in a thick velvet skin that feels spongey. Once their antlers have reached full size and have hardened, these northern beasts shed the velvet sheath.
