This exquisite armillary sphere was one of the most iconic scientific instruments of the Age of Enlightenment.
.
In his ‘Astronomical and Geographical Essays’, George Adams – King George III’s instrument maker – described how an armillary sphere like this could be used to prove that the Earth was not the static centre of a rotating universe, but a peripheral planetary body itself rotating.
.
A Regency armillary sphere. Made in London, c. 1800. Brass, 25in. (63.5cm.) high. Estimate: £40,000–60,000.
.
Science and Natural History – 10 July at Christie’s London.
