Koko, a #gorilla who became famous for her ability to communicate through sign language, has died in her sleep at the age of 46 at the @kokoandthegorillafoundation’s preserve in California's Santa Cruz mountains.

Koko was born at the @sanfranciscozoo, and Dr. Francine Patterson began teaching the #? sign language that became part of a Stanford University project in 1974.

The foundation says #Koko's capacity for language and empathy opened the minds and hearts of millions.
