#MovementMondays Tracy Oliver is an American producer, writer, and actress. A South Carolina native, Oliver has been interested in the arts since she was a child and attended Stanford University with the goals of becoming an actress.  However, Oliver became frustrated with the lack of opportunities she was getting as a performer and realized that she needed to change it up. So she learned to write, direct, and produce.  After taking a playwriting class, she fell in love with the freedom she felt behind the scenes. Following graduation, Oliver moved to LA and attended the USC Peter Stark Producing Program. Upon receiving her MFA in 2010, she reunited with Stanford classmate, Issa Rae, who was also very interested in behind-the-scenes and in providing more opportunities for artists of color. This led them to create the acclaimed web series, The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl, where Oliver served as an actress, writer, and producer. After Awkward Black Girl, Oliver began landing writing gigs with studios and networks including shows like ABC’s The Neighbors and USA’s Survivor’s Remorse. Oliver’s claim to feature film began when she teamed up with Kenya Barris (ABC’s Black-ish creator) to write the comedy, Barbershop: The Next Cut (2016). In 2017, they came back together to write Girl’s Trip, which grossed over $115 million in the domestic box office, making Oliver the first black woman to write a film that grossed over $100 million. Oliver currently has many projects in development, including a half hour comedy First Wives Club based on the successful 1996 film that has been given a pilot order at Paramount TV. On top of that, Oliver is also set to write and make her directorial debut on a horror film, based off of the young-adult novel Survive the Night about a group of girls caught in a situation at an all-night underground rave in New York City, produced by Pharrell Williams. She has stated that she wants both these projects to feature black female leads! With her authentic voice and unique experiences, I know these projects are going to be spectacular! #TracyOliver
