A glorious celebration of #colour and form, ‘Gabriele Münter Painting Outdoors in front of an Easel’ by Wassily Kandinsky was painted in 1910 during a key period when the artist was transitioning into abstraction. The Alpine #landscape surrounding the town of Murnau had a profound effect on Kandinsky, whose first major breakthrough was his discovery of how colour, when disassociated from representational concerns, could become the principal subject of a painting. This vibrant work, depicting Kandinsky’s companion and lover, originally belonged to fellow artist Alexej von Jawlensky, who kept it for many years, possibly as a memento of the time they all spent together in the Bavarian Alps in a spirit of communal and artistic collaboration.
