As I pack my gear to go to Arctic Svalbard for @natgeoexpeditions this week, I take a quick look at the ice charts and I’m not so surprised that the sea ice is shown to be even further north. There is plenty of open water to cross if we attempt to reach the edge of it. Last winter saw one of the lowest ‘winter maximums’ for sea ice cover across the Arctic Ocean. The trend for coverage and thickness of Arctic sea ice (as recorded by satellites) is downwards. It’s going to be an interesting time looking for ice floes and trying to spot some of the animals associated with the sea ice environment.
