No British Bank Holiday used to be complete without a rumpus on a beach somewhere around the UK. The first rumblings had started in March 1964 at the end of the Easter Holiday. Mods and Rockers had squared up to one another on the beach at Clacton and send day trippers fleeing as they fought on the beach. The Whitsun holiday ,that was in mid May of that year, saw a reprise in beach towns such as Brighton and Bournemouth . By the time of the August Bank Holiday the feud had become so intense it was being discussed in parliament and police were flown in from the north of England to help deal with outbreaks in Hastings , Brighton and other south coast towns. The "tradition" continued in successive years and the addition of the new May bank holiday in 1978 saw another opportunity for the rivals (by this time a new generation of mods and rockers with skinheads also in on the act ) to bring madness to the beaches. Previous bank holidays we have given the rockers plenty of air time so this time we are featuring the Mods. The photo is a throwback shot from an Underground Campaign in Hong Kong .In the early days these scooters were customised by paint jobs. By 63-64 it was full on customisation with wing mirrors, headlights, headlight peaks, air horns and anything chrome and shiny inclduing leaping Jags from Jaguar cars and other car badges including those from the AA and RAC Have a great end to the short holiday and keep out of trouble. #undergroundshoe #undergroundshoes #undergroundlondon #underground_halfmoon #8berwickstreet #mods #scooters
