I finally found this biography of Richard Brautigan in hard cover (sans the dust jacket, so it was very cheap and was hiding at the basement of @strandbookstore) I always was looking for. As if to compensate the fact that there are not many books on him (if any at all, except the photo book called “Seeing Richard” by Erik Weber which I am also looking for, so let me know if anyone have seen one), this book is 850 pages of obsessive details about his life. And it starts really bleak. Even though I do understand the narrative structure of the book and I would do the same if I were to be writing it, and not surprising at all for anyone who knows about his life, but (spoiler!) it starts with the whole first chapter pretty much (or at least feels like) dedicated to the description of his dead body, as he shot himself in the head at Bolinas. And next chapter is essentially the prologue to his life, about his family and ancestors. It takes a bit to see him being alive and kicking. Though these “the end of” and “before the beginning” definitely put his writings in proper context, and is a great way to start the book, it was so bleak that I needed something to counterbalance it, and this made me start reading Harry Potter for the first time in my life. (I always meant to read them someday regardless because when something is very popular, I want to give a try to understand what makes them so popular.) One extra thing is that I was at Bolinas a few years ago (though I didn’t know at the time that that’s where he died) so I can picture the scenery from the book as I read it. (Places like @smileyssaloon is mentioned.) #richardbrautigan
