We're moving (soon)! As many of you already know, our beloved home for over 20 years has finally come to an end. This summer, we'll be slowly relocating to our new space just 1 block north at 263 Yale Ave N! Come visit us beforehand to reminiscence and share some of your beloved stories that you had here in our treasured space! @vanishingseattle just posted the historical and architectural significance of this iconic building, and what it has represented throughout the years as part of the Seattle cityscape. "Built in 1917 w/addition in 1921, was a 2-story garage & maintenance facility for Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Co. In 1927 Charles W. Rodgers remodeled it in #MediterraneanRevival/#SpanishRevival style w/exterior tile work & constructed 1-story addition to use as display & warehouse space (they made fine terrazzo & Spanish tile). It influenced architects, designers, & developer of the #SmithTower. A #Seattle Dept of Neighborhoods survey said it appeared to meet criteria of: National Register of Historic Places, Seattle Landmarks #Preservation Ordinance & was located in potential historic district: “Despite some loss of ornamental tile, the building looks surprisingly unchanged since 1927. It’s 1 of the rare examples of a Spanish eclectic warehouse/storefront building in Seattle…This bldg is also significant, because of its ties with the Russian community, which once had a very strong presence in #Cascade…It was the home & studio of 2 artists, Nicolai Kuvshinoff & wife Bertha…He was the son of the Reverend Vasily Kuvshinoff, who officiated at St. Spiridon Orthodox Cathedral (400 Yale Ave N). The elder Kuvshinoff is also said to have brought with him icons & relics given to him by the Romanovs, which he bequeathed to St. Spiridon. Nicolai himself appears to have painted religious murals in the Cathedral. As an artist, he had some international renown...Some of their work is in the permanent collection of @seattleartmuseum.” The bldg also housed Kelly Floor Coverings (1948-1963), Hall Scott Motor Car Company, Matt Talbot Center & New Hope Center (1988 - '90s)." #repost Thanks to @neilfarmer for providing the photos and sharing his vast knowledge.
