Best Friends. Photo by @katieorlinsky // Sergelen, 5, is from a family of nomadic herders living in the remote Uvs Provence of Mongolia. This region of Mongolia experienced a "dzud" this past winter-an emergency related to extreme weather conditions where severely cold winter weather can kill off millions of livestock, and devastate the livelihood and already fragile way of life for nomadic herders. Once nomadic herders lose their animals, they have no income, and often times must leave the countryside, or parents send their children away to school, and the children never come back.
