Long before Afrobeats was a thing, there was highlife, a genre of music that became the soundtrack for postcolonial euphoria in the ’60s and ’70s and one that is still synonymous with national pride in Nigeria to this day. Photographer @ruthossaistudio and designer @mowalola Ogunlesi bring that vibrant look and sound to the fore with their latest collaboration: a photo series inspired by throwback highlife videos and album covers that is part of the @nataalmedia exhibit of new African photography at @redhooklabs in Brooklyn.
