The twins are Mariam’s first babies since she was married off by her parents 10 years ago, when she was just 12. “I had a c-section. I was so happy to see my babies when they were finally there,” says Mariam. “Everyone says that the older one looks like his father, and the younger baby looks like me. Seeing them was amazing. They both had breathing problems as they were born prematurely. They needed an injection to help their lungs expand, and antibiotics. Naushin also needed a blood transfusion. Naurin had eye problems. They spent 15 days at the hospital. They were lying in an incubator, receiving oxygen to prevent their lungs from collapsing. Next, before I went home, the doctors taught me about kangaroo mother care. At the hospital, I would keep them with me two to three times per day for 20 minutes each. When I’m at home, I can do it while I do my chores. When you do this, the baby feels your warmth. The technique increases their body temperature and their love for their mother – it deepens their connection with me. I felt more in control this way, since they were so tiny. I felt that this could change their condition, help them grow. And, of course, in doing so, I felt my own love for my children increase. They used to be very quiet; now they move around, they smile and they’re joyful – it’s so beautiful to watch.” To help more babies like Naushin and Naurin, sign our petition!
