An exquisite example of Pablo Picasso’s celebrated Rose period, ‘Famille d’arlequin’ from 1905 is distinguished from the artist’s related works of harlequins – typically depicted as lonely, melancholy figures – by the palpable mood of tenderness depicted in the present work. During this time, Picasso was fascinated by circus performers and the position of these entertainers as societal outcasts resonated with the young artist, who saw in them a symbol of human suffering, particularly the suffering of the artist.
