I was left feeling uneasy after seeing these latest accusatory developments on Instagram. The climbing community can do better than this. First and foremost, there is no possibility of civilized discussion or argument on Instagram. The mob mentality is unforgiving on a fan page that is extremely biased to one end. What becomes of all this is merely a digital shouting match on somebody’s home turf. I’ve been on the receiving end of this ‘cyber bullying’ so I know how overwhelmingly bad it feels to get attacked by the masses online, day and night. My crime? Wanting to try a route hyped as the hardest route in the world at the time - a route I wasn’t allowed to try and a route that I haven’t touched to this day. Yet I was mercilessly attacked online for having the audacity to even think about trying this route. It went on to the extent that I had to disable the comments section on my blog altogether. As a community, letting these online witch-hunts go on can take us to a very dangerous place. If tolerated, this can quickly lead to a situation where climbers need to start censoring themselves in fear of the masses disliking something and ganging up against you online. And furthermore this gives the OK for the anonymous masses to jump in and condemn whoever gets the finger pointed at them in the future. If you have been a victim of a crime or personal harassment that isn’t solvable in private, you can turn to the police and other officials for assistance. It is also conveniently easy to block people on social media. Let’s all just spend a little more time out climbing and a little less time condemning other people online✌️
