In an unprecedented conservation initiative, black rhinos are returning to @zakouma_national_park in Chad for the first time in 50 years! The 3,000-mile journey began this morning in South Africa, where six wild black rhinos were loaded into individual crates onto an aircraft that will deliver them safely to Zakouma in Southern Chad. While the country’s last black rhino was recorded in 1972, since 2010 when African Parks first assumed responsibility for managing Zakouma, poaching inside the park has essentially been eliminated, and elephants are on the rise for the first time in over a decade. Local people are now benefitting from the existence of the park through economic and social development. This is an incredible moment in history where an entire species has been restored to a country and was made possible through an international cross-collaboration with South Africa’s Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), the Chadian Government, African Parks and South African National Parks (SANParks).
