Every year, millions of sharks are hunted for a popular Asian dish, known as shark fin soup. Several studies have shown this soup to contain high levels of mercury, a toxin very dangerous to the human body.
Shark fin soup is cruel and wasteful. The fins of the shark are cut off while the sharks are still alive and then they are tossed back into the ocean to sink to the bottom of the ocean and suffocate and die. Sharks are apex predators who play an essential role in the oceans ecosystem. Acting as white blood cells of the ocean, they keep the waters free and clean of disease. Finning endangers sharks as well as the oceans overall ecosystem.
In the United States alone, only 11 states have a ban on shark fin soup. You can help encourage your local restaurants that serve shark fin soup to stop by submitting a letter or writing your local state representatives. www.oneoceanconservation.org has pre-written letters you can download, print, fill out and submit.
