Image by @Joel Sartore | With flattened bodies that look as if they were run over with a steam roller, and two large front claws that break off the instant something grabs them, porcelain crabs like this one at @GulfSpecimen are incredible creatures. Found in every ocean except the Arctic and Antarctic, porcelain crabs often live on, in, and around other creatures in a symbiotic relationships. The kind of spotted porcelain crab from the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean is frequently found living in association with large hermit crabs. Pairs of mated spotted porcelain crabs can often be found inside whelk and snail shells that are occupied by the largest hermit crab in the world, Petrochirus diogenes. There they live, sifting plankton and foraging the wastes of other inhabitants that include pink cloak anemones, several species of white and brown slipper limpets, and little brown scale worms. Although these crabs are seldom more than a inch long, they tend to make a big show of feeding by explosively sweeping the water with their exaggerated feathery mouth parts.
