This Siciliana from Bach’s 1st solo sonata always makes me feel a little more at peace ? Especially the very last phrase is like a shimmer of a memory to me and feels so comforting to play & to listen to. ———————————————————————— For my music nerds: in this movement, you can hear Bach’s polyphonic use of different voices especially well. Don’t know what polyphony is? Imagine a choir in a church, for example: there’s the sopranos, which are usually women with higher voices, then the altos (women with a bit lower voices), then tenors (which are men with a bit higher voices), and the bass: the men with vey low voices. Now, imagine the violin doing a high voice, the middle voices and the bass voice. Those different voices making sense together in a piece of music is what polyphony is - put very simply. I’m sure there are people out there who will want to correct my way of explaining, but this is the best I can do in a short text ?✌? Anyways, Bach was and is famous for using different voices beautifully. That’s part of what makes him so complex. And if you listen closely, you can hear it really well in this Siciliana! ❤️? It’s so cool how one violin can basically sound as if many different instruments are playing at once, don’t you think!? ? ———————————————————————— Whole video is in the link in my bio!
