Since January, @alphajada has been traveling the world while on assignment for @nytimestravel. Her challenge: to visit every destination from our list of of 52 places to go in 2018. This week she writes about her visit to La Paz, Bolivia — which included a day trip to Salar de Uyuni, or the Uyuni Salt Flats, pictured here. About 12,000 feet above sea level, the 4,000-square-mile expanse of level ground is covered with mineral deposits from prehistoric lakes. (You might recognize the landscape as the stand-in for the planet Crait from “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”) 3-day tours book up months in advance, but @alphajada found a 1-day trek from @kanootours. After an early-morning flight, she was off in a 4 x 4 with 5 other travelers and a guide. “Most of our time was spent having our minds blown by those vast fields of salt, covered in shallow water, and so reflective and still that it was hard to tell where the ground ended and the sky began,” she writes.
