"It put the world on wheels." Tim Kelly, of Schaumburg, Ill., never dreamed of one day having a car collection, but then he ran into a Ford Model T buried in his friend's barn. "I thought, I would love to take something like that and rebuild it back to its old grandeur." The Model T was so affordable and reliable that some 15 million were sold between 1908 and 1927.
Today, Tim and his wife, Carrie, have a personal collection of 13 vehicles, including a 1905 Holsman, a British tank and several Model T's—including a 1917 Runabout and a 1919 model originally used as a taxi, with custom wood bodywork.
It took a year to restore that first Model T barn find, and Tim lost three fingers in the process after one bad error with a table saw. "I look at the bright side: Now I do not have to pretend to enjoy playing golf," he said.
