Uxmal (Yucatec Mayan: Óoxmáal) is an ancient Maya city of the Classical period in present-day Mexico. It is considered one of the most important archaeological sites of Mayan culture. Most of the city's major construction took place while Uxmal was the capital of a Late Classic Maya state around 850-925 AD.

Here photographed the “Temple of the Doves”, named by nineteenth century explorer John Lloyd Stephens for its ornate fretwork and roof combs. To Stephens, the top of the temple looked like a dovecote. The structure, once part of a quadrangle, has a richly decorated lower storey, unlike other buildings at Uxmal, and is thought to date to the earliest phase of the site.
