South Africa, like virtually everywhere else in the world, has a complex history when it comes to queerness: Homosexuality was illegal under apartheid, and while gay marriage was officially legalized in 1998, there’s still a marked lack of trans representation in media and an entrenched culture of homophobia. But as of late, artists and activists from metropolitan areas like Cape Town and Johannesburg have been making a cultural impact on a grander, more globalized scale.
