Photo by @salvarezphoto (Stephen Alvarez) | A swarm of butterflies is a sure sign of spring but the behavior has a distinctly unprosaic name. “Mud-puddling” is common to many insects but most conspicuous among butterflies. They gather on moist surfaces -like this receding puddle along a creek in Alabama- and suck up fluid. The liquids contain nutrients, salts and amino acids that they need. These particular butterflies are Eastern tiger swallowtails one of over 550 species of swallowtail butterflies. #mudpuddling #butterfly #spring
