‘Mannen Bridge in Fukagawa’ (1857) is one of my favorite prints in Hiroshige’s seminal series, ‘One Hundred Famous Views of Edo’. It depicts the Edo-era Buddhist custom of vendors setting up shop next to rivers so that passers by may purchase and then release an animal -saving a life to bring oneself good karma. ???
