Here's a story about the day I took this photo; Just over a year ago I was in South America on a project & I realised I was 6,600km from a place I'd always wanted to visit, Easter Island. That's a big distance but the way I saw it I was 1,900km closer than if I was at home in London. I looked at my calendar & saw I had some downtime, I looked at my bank account & saw I had enough for the flight so I booked it. I'd first seen an image of the Moai Heads in a fat school textbook when I was eight years old. I remember being mesmerised by how mysterious they looked & the accompanying map fascinated me too; it was a box full of blue except for a dot of green- Easter Island is literally in the middle of nowhere. Those memories were re-surfacing as I sat with anticipation at the back of the minibus on the way to Ahu Tongariki but when we arrived, my heart sank. Tour groups were swarming the area, cellphones were going off, souvenirs were being flogged & selfie sticks were being spun around. After just fifteen minutes I was hurried back on the bus. I was gutted. Really gutted. How could the middle of nowhere be full of so much familiarity? Where was the sense of mystery I'd hoped for? Disappointed but keen to try again, I organised a car early the next morning. As a photographer I wanted to get some photos without being rushed of course, but much more than that I wanted a few quiet moments in the presence of the stone giants to ponder the same thoughts I'd pondered back in that classroom. That tiny photo of Easter Island hidden away in that textbook probably sparked my fascintion with the wider world & made me want to travel. The next morning I arrived at Ahu Tongariki and there was no-one around. The taxi zoomed off with the promise of being back in an hour and I smiled as I walked in front of the fifteen giants alone. I'm not really sure why I'm telling you this, it's just a fond memory I have about this day. I love taking my photos, I love finding a way to share something familiar in a different way & there's often a smile on my face when I'm doing that, but it was an extra big smile the day I took this photo. Have a Happy Easter ?
