Ellis Island opened its doors on January 1, 1892—and Annie Moore was the first passenger to pass through its doors. At just 17, Moore had come over from Queenstown, Ireland, along with her two younger brothers. She spent twelve days—including Christmas—at sea, and was the first off the boat and onto the Island. Over the next 62 years that Ellis Island operated, more than 12 million immigrants passed through the station, in her footsteps. A statue of Annie sits on Ellis Island to this day.
